Message Notes: Covenant Love

Hosea 6:6 – I desire mercy and not sacrifice, And the knowledge of God…

Jeremiah 31:3 – Yes I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore with LOVINGKINDNESS I have drawn you…

Hesed – Found about 250 times in the Old Testament, ḥeseḏ means loyal, steadfast, or faithful love based on a promise, agreement, or covenant. – Walvoord, J. F., Zuck, R. B., & Dallas Theological Seminary.

Covenant:

  • Word covenant is used 314 times in the Bible (NKJV)
  • It was a solemn agreement between two parties that was never to be broken…
  • The highest form of covenant was a blood covenant… promises/commitments would be sworn between two parties and it could only be broken by death
  • Genesis 15 – God makes a covenant with Abraham…
  • Ever wonder why the Bible makes such a big deal about the “blood of Jesus”? Because when He shed His blood God was making an eternal covenant with man… one that could never be broken

Hesed = loyal, steadfast, faithful love that is forged by covenant… IT IS BLOOD COVENANT LOVE

Some examples of HESED in the Scriptures:

  • Psalm 89:28 – My mercy will I keep with Him forever, and My covenant shall stand firm with him.
  • Psalm 57:10 – Your mercy (hesed) reaches the clouds
  • Deut 7:9 – his mercy to a thousand generations
  • Isaiah 54:10 – the mountains shall be removed but not my kindness…
  • Psalm 52:8 – I trust in your mercy
  • Psalm 136… EVERY VERSE
  • Psalm 23:6 – surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life…
