MESSAGE NOTES: Rescue Ship Christianity #4

#4 – EMBRACING YOUR EVANGELISTIC STYLE (PART 2)

I       INTRODUCTION

A)    We are focusing on RESCUE SHIP CHRISTIANITY

B)    Luke 19:9-10 (NIV) – 9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; 10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

C)    Just as Jesus came to seek and save the lost… you and I are called to to seek and save the lost as well

D)   We reject a CRUISE SHIP mentality and we embrace a RESCUE SHIP mentality.

II     UNDERSTANDING AND EMBRACING YOUR EVANGELISTIC STYLE

A)    Many of us don’t understand that there are a variety of evangelistic styles and that each one of us has been ‘pre-wired’ with styles that we are most effective in.

B)    Last lesson we talked about the confrontational style – this is the style that many times is promoted above all others – and while there are times that we all need to allow ourselves to be stretched to be confrontational most of us hate confrontation and will never be particularly strong at this style.

C)    If we will identify our style(s) and focus on using them to win people we will be far more effective and have a lot more fun doing it

D)   Furthermore, if we can become skilled in different styles we will be able to identify what style will work best in different contexts

III   STYLE #2 – FRIENDSHIP EVANGELISM

A)    Matthew 11:19 (NIV) –  The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”

B)    Biblical Example: Zachaeus – Jesus went to eat at his house (Luke 19:1-10)

C)    People in our culture are more disconnected than ever… and real friendship will open the door to sharing the gospel. Please note: people will sense ‘fake friendship’ from a mile away. Real love is what works.

D)   Example: Carl Lentz the Lead Pastor of Hillsong NYC (Book: Own the Moment)

IV   STYLE #3 – SERVICE EVANGELISM

A)    Romans 2:4 (NIV) – Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?

B)    Biblical Example: Dorcas (Acts 9:36-42)

C)    When we show God’s love and kindness to people in practical ways they will naturally ask ‘why are you doing this?’ and you can share with them.

D)   Example: Steve Sjorgen “Father of Servant-Evangelism” (Book: Conspiracy of Kindness)

V     STYLE #4 – INVITATIONAL EVANGELISM

A)    John 1:40-42 (NIV) – 40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus.

B)    Sometimes the simplest way to evangelize is to simply invite someone to come to something where they will hear the gospel

C)    Example: Billy Graham Campaign – Operation Andrew

VI   STYLE #5 – TESTIMONIAL EVANGELISM

A)    Acts 1:8 (NIV) – But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

B)    Acts 4:20 (NIV) – As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”

C)    Biblical Example: The Man Born Blind (John 9:15-25)

D)   A witness is someone who shares what they have seen and heard. When you share the story of what God has done in your life it has a powerful impact

E)     A man with experience is never at the mercy of one with an opinion – Pastor L.H. Hardwick

VII STYLE #6 – POWER EVANGELISM

A)    Romans 15:18-19 (NIV) – 18 I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me in leading the Gentiles to obey God by what I have said and done—19 by the power of signs and wonders, through the power of the Spirit of God. So from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum, I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ.

B)    Biblical Example: Philipp at Samaria – “when the crowd heard Phillip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said” (Acts 8)

C)    Signs and wonders are supposed to be a part of every day Christianity. They help demonstrate to people that God is real and that he loves them.

D)   Example: John Wimber. Bill Johnson and Bethel Church.

VIII        STYLE #7 – PROPHETIC EVANGELISM

A)    1 Cor 14:24-25 (NIV) – 24 But if an unbeliever or an inquirer comes in while everyone is prophesying, they are convicted of sin and are brought under judgment by all, 25 as the secrets of their hearts are laid bare. So they will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, “God is really among you!”

B)    Biblical Example: Jesus with the Woman at the Well (John 4)

C)    This is very closely linked to Power Evangelism as it demonstrates the power of God. When God shows us things about people it shows them His love and how real He is.

D)   Example: Shawn Bolz (Book: Translating God)

IX    STYLE #8 – PRAYER EVANGELISM

A)    James 5:16 (NIV) – Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

B)    Ed Silvoso talks about prayer evangelism in the context of praying for people to come to Jesus and waiting for God to open the door

C)    We can also engage in prayer evangelism by simply offering prayer to people and praying for them

D)   Example: Ed Silvoso and Prayer Evangelism (Book: Prayer Evangelism)

X      STYLE #9 – INTELECTUAL EVANGELISM

A)    Acts 17:2-3 (NIV) – 2 As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and proving that the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead. “This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Messiah,” he said.

B)    There is a place to reason with people and discuss the claims of Jesus and the validity of the gospel

C)    Example: Ravi Zacharias (www.RZIM.org)

XI    STYLE #10 – GIFT BASED EVANGELISM

A)    There are so many different ways to share Jesus with people around us and to creatively use whatever God has put in our hands

B)    Ex: YWAM: Crossfit Box Outreach, Athletes in Action: Sports Outreach, DRIME: Drama Outreach, Brantford: Captain Kindness

THE CHALLENGE: ASK GOD TO SHOW YOU AREAS OF YOUR LIFE WHERE YOU ARE A CRUISE SHIP CHRISTIAN AND ASK HIM TO HELP YOU BECOME A RESCUE SHIP CHRISTIAN.
